Unlike acoustics, electric guitars need an amplifier to transmit their sound. When the strings are played, electric pick-ups (silver devices near the base of the strings) transmit the vibrations through the guitar chord into an amplifier. Rock, heavy-metal and punk rely heavily on these instruments.
