In the modern-age of rock music, innovators have used the electric guitar to produce unique sounds through finger tapping and effects. One of the most well-known examples of this is Jimi Hendrix’s rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” which takes advantages of distortion and feedback to create a stunning version of the national anthem.

Sheet music lays out the time signature and notation that allows a student to play a musical piece.
Sheet music
From classical movements to modern movie soundtracks, sheet music is used to teach an orchestra how to play a song. Different instruments will have different notation, which makes for a complex song full of rich texture and layers.

Professional orchestra performers must often possess sight-reading abilities. Sight-reading means a performer can play off sheet music without hearing the song beforehand. This skill is valuable because studio-time is very expensive, and the faster an orchestra can complete a musical piece, the better.

Rock and jazz doesn’t utilize sheet music as prominently as classical music. Modern rock is mainly comprised of chord changes that a musician can easily memorize; jazz relies on a lead sheet that lays down the timing and chord changes, but allows room for solos and improvisation.
